Ahoy there cake lovers…

Welcome to HMS Cupcake and our little blog about our adventures in baking. Our Captain’s log is really supposed to be about all of our baking experiments, our successes (sometimes failures!), and the events we set sail to. But before we can get to that part, we thought we’d indulge in sharing the preparation of our vessel: The good ship Gloria – aka HMS Cupcake.

Today is really the first day that we can properly call ourselves a vintage food truck business – since until this point, we were doing at least two jobs (one ‘real’ one in a more corporate world), and trying to fit in restoring our 1969 Renault Estafette (Gloria). Waving goodbye to a career that spanned 20 years doing something COMPLETELY different from baking is a bit of a daunting prospect, but this morning its fair to say that all of that disappeared and was replaced by excitement. The catalyst? Some seats.

Seats? Yep, thats right. The first nice bit of Gloria has arrived ready to be fitted. Prior to a bit of love from Aldridge Trimming (massive thanks to the team there), I can honestly say they were rubbish. We’ve lost at least one pair of trousers to some protrusions in the framework and we don’t think French pick up drivers in the 1970s had bottoms that were as discerning as ours – so now that they’re here in all their co-ordinating vinyl glory, you will hopefully excuse our joy. Just look at those bad boys…

I fear that our happiness may be short lived as we embark on our next challenge – replacing some dubious looking steel framework. Welding is not our strong point (there are limits!), so we’ve drafted in some reserves who are a bit dab handed with an industrial looking tool that we’re not sure of the name of. It will likely be one of those jobs that looks way worse before it gets better. Which we’re learning is the theme of this project. Carpentry, laminating and vehicle servicing are just a couple of the things we’ve had to get our hands dirty on, and so far so good. We’re not entirely sure how Gloria feels about the whole thing, but we’d like to think she’s breathing a sigh of relief at being brought slowly into the 21st century.

So. Watch this space. We hope it will be mostly highlights, and we promise some baking discussions at some point too…
